Part ⑥Distrustful Pursuit
He liked being called "Koichi" by that sweet voice.
They had been together since they were old enough to understand. Both were born into families of exorcists, they both trained as exorcists, and they stood on the battlefield at the same time.
The combination of Kagari Yui and Ino Koichi was unbeatable.
Even in the high-level city of Kyoto, it didn't take long for rumors to spread that they were together.
As comrades.
As childhood friends.
-- As the opposite sex.
It was only natural that Ino Koichi would be attracted to Kagari Yui.
And he was sure that Yui felt the same way.
She just hadn't realized her feelings yet, but that she would understand eventually.
Or so Ino Koichi thought.
-- Until five years ago, when that weak man was assigned to their unit.

After a day off, Jin returned to the field.
The interrogation of the captured sorcerer continues, but he has not yet given up any information, and it is not possible to determine whether he is a factor in the increased activity of the demons.
However, it is certain that the demons' activities began to calm down the day after the successful raid on the sorcerer's base. It was a risky operation, but Jin was relieved that it was effective.
"I hope peace will continue like this."
The Kyoto Exorcist League headquarters is located in a large shrine. Jin mutters to himself in the corner of the training ground. It is just a dream. The sorcerer was captured, but he was not the "mastermind."
Currently, he is a threat that shakes the exorcist world.
A terrorist unprecedented in history who destroyed the Kanto branch.
If he is not captured soon, even greater damage will be caused. Especially here in the Kyoto headquarters, where the "princess" is. She must not be corrupted under any circumstances.
As I was spacing out, thinking of the face on the wanted poster, someone called out to me from beside me.
"Kinoshita-san, are you tired?"
"Shindo-kun"
The boy who spoke to me, holding a bottle of water, was a boy named Shindo Yuuji. He was a promising high school exorcist who came to the Kyoto headquarters last year.
He was also a living witness to the destruction of the Kanto branch. In that battle, he lost two important companions. Jin knew both of them. There was a feeling that it couldn't be that they were killed, but if Yuuji himself said it, he had no choice but to believe it.
"Tired... No, maybe a little tired. The last mission was tough."
"But I heard that thanks to Kinoshita-san, we were able to capture the curse user. Apparently it was the catalyst for defeating a high-ranking demon."
"Haha. I don't remember."
I sneak a look at Yuuji's profile, mocking myself.
What if I were in his position?
What if Yui was taken away from me?
--For a moment, he has a flashback of her sucking a man's dick.
No, no. I've been thinking weird things lately.
"You'll be the captain of the first squad soon, right? To coincide with your engagement ceremony with Yui-san."
"That's an early rumor. Well, it's true."
"Maybe it's because of the handover, but you two seem busy."
"Haha. You know everything."
"Even so, you still train whenever you have free time, that's amazing. I have to try not to lose to you. ...Well then."
He leaves the rest area and returns to the center of the training ground. There, an exorcist sister who had just returned from America is waiting for him, and the two are chatting happily.
--Maybe he's feeling a little better now.
Jin stretches as he looks at the boy, who is much more stoic than himself, from afar.
Then, his thoughts turn to Yui.
Just as Yuuji said, he had been so busy with the aftermath of capturing the sorcerer and organizing the team that he hadn't had time to talk to Yui.
Because he was hospitalized, the promise they had made before the raid had fallen through the cracks. Jin was shy, but he wasn't stoic enough to resist Yui's sexual charms.
He wanted to be alone with her soon.
Wishing this, he returned to the office, where he found Yui typing away at the captain's desk. He mustered up the courage to talk to her.
"Yuii-chan, are you free tonight?"
"Eh, tonight? Today, let’s see…."
Perhaps because he had suddenly called out to her, Yui looked a little confused as she flipped through her planner. It was unusual for her who always keep her schedule in order.
It was the other vice captain, Koichi, who came to her rescue.
"Sorry, Jin. The captain and me is going to report to the higher-ups today. We have to interrogate the captured sorcerer again, so it looks like we'll be late."
"Oh, I see. In that case, I'll help out."
Naturally, Jin offered, but
"Jin, you're still just getting better. Leave this to us."
"Eh, but..."
"It's not a but. It's an order from the captain."
If Yui had clearly refused, and even given an order, he had no choice but to back down.
"Okay. Well, I'll go home quietly for today. See you tomorrow."
"Yeah, see you tomorrow."
Though he was reluctant to leave, Jin left the office.
Leaving Yui and Koichi alone.
○
"Yui-chan"
"Sorry Jin-kun, I have a meeting."
Even after that day.
"Today, well..."
"I was invited to a shrine maiden's party."
Jin couldn't find time to be alone with Yui.
"You're off duty tomorrow night, right?"
"My mother called."
Not even for a minute.
In the blink of an eye, a month had passed since the raid.
Before long, he couldn't bring himself to invite her to his room again. Not only did they not have the time to have sex, but they also had no time to discuss the handover of the squad, the engagement ceremony, and the wedding.
Even when they were fighting demons at night, they often split up, and Jin and Yui were basically separated.
"Are you tired?"
During the break, Jin smiled when Akiho asked him. He forced his facial muscles to move.
"That's not true. I can still work."
"That's fine, but..."
Akiho backs down, but her words are very vague. Ryoko pops up from behind her.
"You see, the captain and vice captain haven't been spending much time together lately."
"What? You noticed?"
"Of course I would notice. You always went to and from work together."
"Haha..."
She can only chuckle bitterly at her subordinate's insight into her private life.
"The commander has been spending a lot of time with Vice Commander Ino lately. Well, those two are childhood friends and make a good pair, so it's only natural. Vice Commander Kinoshita have to be careful not to let the captain get taken away."
"Hey, don't be rude. Neither Commander Kagari nor Vice Commander Ino are that kind of people."
"Ouch."
Ryoko is nudged by Akiho, but she doesn't seem sorry at all.
"Even if you you say that, Akiho, do you think there's a chance?"
I don't know what the chance is, but Ryoko teases Akiho. Jin is worried that she'll get angry, but
"That's not true."
Akiho cuts her off easily. She can get quite emotional when teased. I wonder if something has happened recently.
Furthermore, Akiho says something unusual to Jin.
"But you two are engaged. Why don't you be more proactive?"
"Oh, Akiho, that's a good point. Women wait for men to come to them. They want to be chased."
Ryoko agreed with Akiho and nudged Jin with her elbow.
"Vice captain Kinoshita is attractive because he's serious and sincere, but sometimes you need to be aggressive, aggressive."
"But what should I do when you say aggressive?"
Before I knew it, it had turned into a love consultation. Jin, who was actually in a difficult position, took the bait with the two women's advice.
"After today's mission is over, why don't you go straight to the captain's house?"
"No, she said he was going back to the company office after today's mission. She wanted to get a change of clothes or something."
"In that case, the vice captain won't go straight home, but will go back to the company! It would be even better if he brought some souvenirs!"
Then, things started to move smoothly.
"No souvenir stores are open at this time of night."
"Convenience store sweets will do. The captain said she was interested in the new tiramisu."
"I-I see."
The two girls' attack cut off his escape route in an instant.
--In the end, there was no encounter with any demons, and the patrol ended safely. This peace was the only thing that soothed Jin right now.
After parting ways with his subordinates, he stopped by a convenience store as Ryoko advised, and bought a tiramisu as she told him to.
Jin then returned to the office.
"I wonder if she hasn't come back yet."
Everyone seems to be out at the office at midnight, and there is no sign of anyone.
Just as he goes in and tries to wait for Yui, he spots her walking towards him from the opposite road.
"Huh?"
But then Jin sees something he can't believe. He is so shaken that he instinctively hides in the shadows. He then pops his head out briefly to check on Yui once more.
It is definitely Yui. She has just returned from a mission, and is wearing a shrine maiden's outfit. Her beautiful black hair has grown longer every year, making her even more charming as a neat shrine maiden. She is wearing the flower hair ornament that he gifted for her.
Next to her is Koichi, who has accompanied her. He is in a suit, muscular, and handsome, and standing next to Yui, he is truly picturesque. To be honest, Jin is almost jealous. However, the two are childhood friends and members of the same unit, so it is not strange for them to be together.
The problem is the distance between them.
The two of them had their arms around each other, just like lovers.
That was supposed to be his place. That distance should belong only to him. Jin was confused.
"So--you see--yes--"
"Yeah, that's right--"
He thought maybe she was doing it reluctantly for some reason, but as he approached, Yui’s expression brightened. That's the kind of face she only shows to people she trusts. Of course, the same could be said for Koichi, but there was something different about him. Koichi was also engrossed in a pleasant conversation, though he couldn't hear what they were saying.
Yui and Koichi both entered the office building without noticing Jin. It was too late to call out to the two at this point, but he couldn't just leave them there and go home either.
He suppressed his heart, which was beating loudly, and followed them.
--Could it be that, my own girlfriend…?
It was more than just a bad feeling. She was not the kind of woman to commit adultery like that. Jin knew that better than anyone. So this must be some kind of mistake. Or maybe he's trying to surprise him. Jin came up with one guess after another, but none of them seemed right.
Jin even used his spiritual powers to hide his presence so as not to make any noise or show his shadow.
Yui and the others headed not to the office room, but to the locker room.
Just as Jin was wondering if they were going to get changed,
"Eh?"
Koichi had entered the women's locker room with Yui as if it was the most natural thing to do. Of course, there was a separate men's locker room. What business could Koichi have in the women's locker room?
Managing to calm his breathing, Jin clenched his sweaty fists and walked towards the women's locker room.
Light was leaking in from the half-open door.
He had no choice but to go in.
He held his breath so as not to make any noise and peeked into the locker room.
Yes, he peeked inside Pandora's box, a box that should never have been opened.
